Father Doyle’s devotion for the Sacred Heart of Jesus was to him, not a merely sentimental, emotional devotion. The famous image of the Sacred Heart for Father Doyle reflected an image of endurance, of acceptance, of sacrifice all out of love. The fact that our Lord’s Heart reveals the reality of suffering and sacrifice, taught Father Doyle that we, too, will live out in our own lives suffering, sacrifice, acceptance and endurance of whatever God places upon our path. Like Christ, we have to be ready for the challenges which come with life.
