Father Doyle sought out, at times, extreme mortification. Though his way is oftentimes most probably beyond our choice of mortification, we may still seek that which could help us to work to decrease our selfishness and self centeredness in ways that we can manage with success- always with God’s grace. No virtue can be acquired unless God gives us His help; and not only to acquire virtue, but also to maintain our virtue and make it stronger. All of this is a lifetime job.
