Thoughts for February 11 (Our Lady of Lourdes) from Fr Willie Doyle

Almost the first thing which caught my eye at the grotto was our Lady’s words: “Penitence, penitence, penitence”. On leaving, I asked Jesus had He any message to give me. The same flashed suddenly into my mind and made a deep impression on me.

COMMENT: Today is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Fr Doyle visited the shrine in November 1912, and today’s quote summarises his spiritual experience there.

This reflection on Lourdes is utterly characteristic of Fr Doyle, who had such a horror for sin and combined this with a special vocation for reparation for sin.

In almost all approved Marian apparitions, Our Lady urges us to prayer and penance. Yes, she also comes to tell us of the love of God, and often reveals this love through miraculous healings and other graces. But just like in the Gospel, penance remains central to the message. Let us remember these thoughts as we come closer to Lent.

What on earth are you doing with an advertisement like the one above on a supposedly “Catholic” website.?

    Dear Never Mind:
Thank you for your comment and for drawing my attention to a potential problem.
Unfortunately I have to say I have no idea what you are talking about. I see no ads on this site, good, bad or indifferent.
I place no ads on this site and I make no money from this. It has been a conscious decision on my part not to place ads here.
Now, it does sometimes happen that WordPress, who host the site for free, decide to temporarily place ads on the site. I have personally encountered ads on the site less than half a dozen times in almost two years. Perhaps I am less exposed to ads as I normally view the site as an administrator of the site so WordPress may not be advertising to me. At no point have I encountered an objectionable ad, and if I had I would certainly have taken action against it. Out of tens of thousands of readers of the site over the past 20 months, no other reader has ever drawn my attention to ads at all, so I have certainly been unaware of any potential problem.
Indeed, the practice of online advertising is such that ads can sometimes be placed in very diverse ways, such that one person sees an ad when another doesn’t, or that different ads appear for different people.
I will certainly try to get to the bottom of this problem. Perhaps you could help by sending me an email outlining the nature of the objectionable ad – frwilliedoyle@gmail.com
As a concluding point, I do want to stress that I am extremely grateful that you brought this to my attention and I would really appreciate some further information on this problem to help me get to the bottom of this. However, in general it is best to assume the goodwill and good intentions of others. Your comment was written in a way that implied that I was in some way aware of the ads and was a hypocrite. I hope you accept that this is not the case.

The ad is a one minute YouTube video for H&R Block which is an American tax preparer company. There is nothing objectionable in it.
