Fr Doyle was a member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, which mean that he took a pledge never to drink alcohol. He was committed to the Pioneers, and was wearing his Pioneer pin on his uniform when he was killed. Fr James Cullen had even tipped him to be his successor as head of the Pioneers.
