Morning Ireland is one of Ireland’s most popular radio programmes. This morning it carried a very beautiful tribute to Fr Doyle. Of special note is that Hugh Cumisky, Fr Doyle’s great-nephew (Fr Willie’s sister was Hugh’s grandmother) takes part in the discussion. https://rte.ie/r.html?rii=b9_21219034_48_16-08-2017_ There will be further coverage of Fr Doyle’s anniversary on the 6pm and 9pm evening news tonight.
Fr Doyle’s 100th anniversary is in two days time – August 16. It is an excellent time to tell people about his life and his message. I always find that people – even if they have little or no faith or interest in religion – are amazed at his life and his heroism when they first encounter him. Introducing people to the example of Fr Doyle is a useful act …
Magdalen O’Connell, who I met briefly at the book launch on Thursday, had a short radio essay on Sunday morning about her uncle Donal Galvin, a soldier in the 16th Irish Division, and Fr Doyle. Fr Doyle was killed instantly on 16 August 1917, Magdalen’s uncle was fatally wounded, and died 6 years later from the injuries sustained that day. The radio essay can be found here: https://rte.ie/r.html?rii=b9_10760106_68_13-08-2017_ It starts approximately …
For those who are not from Dublin, it is worth noting that Hodges Figgis is probably the biggest bookstore in Ireland with a dazzling array of books spread out over 4 large floors. It is a mainstream bookstore – as one can see, there are no other religious or spiritual books on the best seller list. In fact, Fr Doyle is 10 and 11 places higher than very secular …
There is an article about Fr Doyle in this week’s Irish Catholic. I didn’t write the title of the article, but I obviously don’t disagree with it! On Fr Doyle’s 100th anniversary (Wednesday) I shall (for the first time, I think…) make a few comments precisely about this issue of Fr Doyle’s canonisation cause. I shall be on the Traveling with God radio programme on Highland Radio with Fr Paddy Dunne this coming Monday evening at 8.30pm (Irish time) – 3.30pm Eastern US time. The 20 minute slot will cover Fr Doyle’s life and legacy as well as the new book To Raise the Fallen. You can listen to the interview live on www.highlandradio.com I am happy to give talks and interviews about Fr …
Great to see! There was a time when O’Rahilly’s biography of Fr Doyle was a best seller and Fr Doyle was truly loved by ordinary Dubliners – they identified with his sacrificial generosity. His image would have been familiar to many. It’s 100 years now since he made the ultimate sacrifice – it’s great to see his picture in a shop window in 2017. Well done Veritas.
