The mortification good for you may be measured by your peace of mind. If you find your should troubled by the penance you practice or feel urged to practice, you should suspect the spirit that is leading you. Give all you can, but let it be the ‘cheerful giver’ whom God loves. When the sacrifice is costing you too much and ruffles the spirit, go a little slower and all will be well.

on Thoughts for March 9 from Fr Willie Doyle.

Such common sense in the passage above. Father Doyle possessed a balance when assisting others who might not have been as intense in their prayer life or spiritual life as he was, so with an understanding mind and heart he guided souls appropriately.
Father Doyle, please teach us how to deal with others so as to be reassuring and comforting with a truly listening ear and heart, and allowing the Holy Spirit give us the words necessary that will really help them.
